Function and Purpose:
Directional markers are set within the four boundaries of north, east, south, and west around a hazard or dangerous area, that is, true bearings northwest to northeast, northeast to southeast, southeast to southwest, and southwest to northwest. The corresponding quadrants are named North Marker, East Marker, South Marker, and West Marker, indicating that the navigable waters are on the side with the same name. Directional markers can also be placed at bends, branch junctions, or at the ends of shallows in a channel.

Applicable Area: Navigable waters in coastal channels.
