Special marks are classified by purpose and are primarily used to mark the following eight categories of waters:
(a) Anchorage: vessel berthing and quarantine anchorages, etc.
(b) Prohibited areas: military exercise zones, prohibited waters, etc.
(c) Offshore operation areas: oceanographic data survey, channel survey, hydrographic survey, diving, salvage, offshore development, spoil grounds, speed measurement areas, compass adjustment areas, etc.
(d) Traffic separation: traffic separation schemes, separation zones, etc. — may be used when the use of conventional aids to navigation for marking traffic separation may cause confusion.
(e) Offshore structures: offshore wind farms, cables, pipelines, water intakes, outfalls, etc.
(f) Recreation areas: sports training areas, offshore recreation areas, etc.
(g) Fishery operation areas: fixed-net fishing zones and aquaculture farms, etc.
(h) Crossing areas: areas where vessels cross the channel, etc.
